總統當選人蔡英文將面對無數難關和挑戰，但她還未就任，對她有提攜之恩的前總統李登輝就拋出一道考題：釣魚台是不是台灣的？蔡英文對此問題的答案很堅定，強調「民進黨的立場一向很清楚，也就是釣魚台是屬於台灣的」。蔡英文的回答值得肯定。

蔡英文曾任國安會諮詢委員，其步入政壇無疑是獲得李登輝的賞識與重用。陳水扁當選總統，蔡英文以無黨籍身分出任陸委會主委，政壇也盛傳是李登輝的推薦，換言之，沒有李登輝就沒有今日的「蔡總統」。

但是，當國家大義與個人的恩惠放在天秤兩端時，孰輕孰重不難分辨。蔡英文獲過半數選民的支持而當選總統，她是要做全民的總統，是以，她在國家主權問題上採取堅定立場，必然能獲得多數民眾的支持。

事實上，不少親綠的民眾也難以認同李登輝的說法，因為再怎麼親日，也不能將國家的財產土地拱手讓人。蔡英文曾要即將卸任的總統馬英九「謹言慎行」，看來這四個字對李登輝也適用。
